Magdalena Consort

The Magdalena Consort, started by Peter Harvey  has as its principal (but not exclusive) goal the performance of the vocal works of J.S. Bach. There has been much debate about the issue of singing Bach with solo voices throughout (with multiple strings), but very few performances, in the grand scheme of things. This group will spend some of its time redressing the balance, literally and metaphorically.

The group has been created to bring together singers and instrumentalists of special talent and personality in a highly-committed approach, which hopefully will bring fresh responses to familiar and unfamiliar repertoire alike. The name "Magdalena Consort" refers to:

·        Anna Magdalena Bach, J.S. Bach's widow and a talented musician, who transcribed some major works, including the cello suites

·        Maria Magdalena, a saint whose particular emotional qualities seem to find frequent echos in music

·        Magdalen College, Oxford

and seeks to evoke the sacred music of the two great traditions, Lutheranism and Catholicism, as well as secular repertoire. Initially, at least, the emphasis will be on the vocal works of J.S. Bach, though not to the exclusion of other repertoire.

Promoters please note: if you wish to include this biography in a concert programme etc, please contact M.A.M. Management to ensure that you receive the most up to date version.
